A holiday season celebration of the toys of yore…
When my son Sam was little, he had this habit that was simultaneously charming and annoying: Whenever, he’d play with his toys in the living room, he wouldn’t just bring out one or two. He’d bring out as many as he could, as he was playing with them.
It was like the Enterprise besieged by Tribbles, except it was all action figures and playsets and Legos and whatnot.
One Saturday morning, I blurted out that it was mayhem. My wife Wendy did me one better: “No, it’s Toyhem.”
And it’s been part of the family lexicon ever since.
So it only seemed appropriate that our new holiday season series celebrating the toys of our youth be dubbed TOYHEM!
For the next several weeks, from now until Christmas, we’ll be presenting a series of features and columns about your faves — Megos, Captain Action, Super Powers, Corgi, and on and on.
We’ll be joined by a whole crew of columnists, from 13th Dimension regulars to top-notch comics creators like Dan Jurgens, Mark Waid, Kevin Nowlan and Gene Luen Yang.
We’ll be updating this post with links as we go, so keep checking back throughout the holiday season.
Because TOYHEM! is upon us.
Oh, and that banner? That’s Sam’s handiwork. He’s grown now — and only he could properly emulate just what the original Toyhem was like all those years ago.
