INSIDE LOOK: Dig This New ‘Super Powers’ HALL OF JUSTICE Playset

Some latter-day Super Friends action for ya…

Hey, we’re wrapping up our informal JUSTICE WEEK look at Anthony Durso’s ultra-clever custom playsets with a bit of a curveball: the Super Powers Hall of Justice, a revamp of the beloved ’80s Kenner playset.

“This was a spur-of-the-moment design decision that I came up with while I was searching for artwork for a Super Friends Hall of Justice, said Anthony, the owner of The Toyroom customizing company. “Since the Super Friends version was going to require watching old episodes for reference I decided to knock this one out first. It’s pretty much a recreation of the Kenner Super Powers Hall of Justice playset/carry case, with an added TroubAlert section.

“I tried to go with a look that emulated the plastic of the ’80s toy, including many of the stickers from that playset,” he added. “The exterior art is DC Super Powers-era style guide art by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and features the eight members of the Justice League that were in the first wave of figures. In actuality, because of the size of the artwork, this particular displayset is probably better suited for the 3 3/4-inch Kenner scale, than it is for 8-inch Mego.”

A few thoughts:

— Personally, I think this works just as well for Megos as it does Super Powers, which basically took over Super Friends at the end of the series’ run.

— In case you missed them, here are the other four HQs we’ve highlighted this week: JLA Satellite (click here), JSA Brownstone (click here), Super Friends Hall of Justice (click here) and the Hall of Doom (click here).

— Once again, this is a really good time to remind you of The World’s Greatest Super Friends Podcast, hosted by John S. Drew and yours truly. We go ep by ep and we’re about halfway through Season 1. (Click here.)

— In addition to the five this week, The Toyroom’s sets include: The Fortress of Solitude (click here for an INSIDE LOOK), Lex Luthor’s Lair, the Batcave/Wayne Foundation (click here), the 1966 Batcave, the 1966 Batgirl apartment and changing room (click here), the Joker’s Ha-Hacienda (click here), the Riddler’s hideout (click here), Paradise Island, the Green Lantern HQ on Oa, Aquaman’s Aquacave (click here), Captain Marvel’s Rock of Eternity (click here), Iron Man’s Armory (click here), the X-Men’s Danger Room (click here), a Star Trek: The Animated Series Enterprise (click here) and a Scooby-Doo haunted house — with more to come.

— And as I always feel compelled to point out, I don’t make anything from this. I just love showing it all off. Each set — including case, artwork and complete assembly — is $85 plus shipping. 1. I really like the design of this latest custom playset. It captures the look and feel of the original “Super Powers” playset very well.
