JOSE LUIS GARCIA-LOPEZ’s BATMAN Work to Get Hardcover Collection

A long-overdue development…

I feel like I have to preface this by saying we are living in uncertain times, especially with Diamond Comic Distributors temporarily halting deliveries of new books as of next week due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But I’m inherently an optimist and would like to believe that there’s still joy to be found in looking forward to the smaller things in life.

And one of those things is Legends of the Dark Knight: Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, a hardcover compendium of the beloved artist’s work on the Caped Crusader, due in November, according to a listing on Amazon.

Dig the official description, along with placeholder art:

Legends of the Dark Knight: Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez

José Luis García-López captures Batman in his most iconic rendition.

Since the 1970s, José Luis García-López’s rendition of Batman has been one of the most iconic and recognizable in comics. This new hardcover collects covers and stories from Batman #272, #311, #313-314, #318, #321, #336-337, #353 (1940s series), Batman ’66: The Lost Episode #1 (2006), Batman Confidential #26-28 (2006), Batman Family #3 (1975-1978), Batman: Gotham Knights #10 (2000), DC Comics Presents #31, #41 (1978-1986), DC Special Series #21 (1977), Detective Comics #454, #458-459, #483, #487 (1937), The Best of the Brave and the Bold #1-6 (1988), The Brave and the Bold #164, #171 (1955), The Joker #4 (1975), The Untold Legend of the Batman #1-3 (1980), and World’s Finest Comics #244, #255, and #258 (1941 series).

A few thoughts:

— The 468-page hardcover lists for $49.99 and is due Nov. 24 on Amazon, which usually means the week before for comics shops.

— Thing is, the entire industry is in a state of flux right now, so this will take some time to shake out.

— Not only that, this has not been officially solicited by DC yet — and even then things could change. In other words, it’s very early days, but it’s nice to see that this is in the planning stages.

— Meanwhile, this comes on the heels of other JLGL news, namely that the classic Superman vs. Wonder Woman treasury edition (click here) and Batman #321 (click here) are both slated for Facsimile Editions.

  1. Long overdue. He’s one of the best! When will they put out a deluxe hardcover of his style guide?

  2. Long overdue! There is truly something breath-takingly refreshing & timelessly classic about Jose’s art. The cleanness of his linework and the aspirational nature of his characters always greet me like a warm friend and remind me what an honest-to-gosh, unashamedly pure comic should be.

I won’t lie, though – the wait for this is going to be unbearable!

  3. A lot of what is listed will be covers. I hope the book includes the Scarecrow’s Corpse and Gorilla City Batman stories that Mr. Garcia-Lopez drew for Power Records.

  5. Was this book cancelled? I don’t think it was ever published and is no longer available on Amazon.
