A 60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION of an extraordinary, landmark year in popular culture…
1966 was an amazing year for pop culture, whether you’re talking TV, music, movies or, our favorite, comic books.
So for the first time in 13th Dimension’s almost 13-year (!) history, we’re doing a theme week spotlighting not a particular subject, but a particular point in time.
If you look at Walt Grogan’s latest phenomenal banner above, you’ll see just a selection of what came out 60 years ago — Star Trek, The Monkees, Batman, The Marvel Super Heroes, The Green Hornet, The Time Tunnel, Tarzan, the Beatles’ Revolver, Filmation’s Superman (and Superboy), Fantastic Voyage, Space Ghost, and Mission: Impossible.
And that’s just a slice. Our regular 13th Dimensioneers — joined by a number of special guests — will be covering the grooviest and ginchiest of 1966 over seven days, so make sure you bookmark this post, because we’ll be adding links as we go.
Why did we choose now, as opposed to, I dunno, June? Because so much of what we’re talking about began the second week of September, so there are a lot of specific 60th anniversaries upon us. (By the way, we’ll have a little Batman ’66 coverage, but we did a whole BATMAN ’66 WEEK in January, celebrating the show’s premiere that month.)

Expecting some Dark Shadows love guys! I’ve been ruminating on the importance of 1966 myself – looking forward to the theme. And there’s still time to catch Star Trek III w Amok Time (Sep 06) and Star Trek IV with City on the Edge of Forever (Sep 07) in theatres (or the all-day marathon on Tuesday [Sep 08]). My wife and I watched TMP w Changeling and Wrath of Khan w Space Seed the last two nights. Seeing the classic episodes on the big screen is incredible. And to my knowledge this may be the first time we’ve gotten to see III and IV since their initial runs (I could be mistaken), but I’m so looking forward to them. Those Titan books about the making of the movies (y’all mentioned IV last week) are awesome as well.

Matthew! Good call on Dark Shadows! I remember running ho.e from grade school to watch it everyday! It definitely deserves inclusion! I wish I had enough room for all my favorites!

I was only suggesting the switching of locations of the 2 existing elements. I felt there was balance with both LIVE action shows – BATMAN & Green Hornet who both shared a connection if they were across from each other. You could also but them side by side and move Marvels to next to Superman. Or nothing at all. I still say Walt did a bang up job.

1966… Great year… I was starting my sophomore year but my eyes were glued to the tv with all those shows… hmmm, no wonder I didn’t have time to date.. or do homework.. or do chores… etc.. etc…
