ADVANCE REVIEW: Diamond’s 1966 ROBIN Statue is a Knockout

BAM! The Boy Wonder socks it to us.

It’s been awhile since we’ve gotten a new Batman ’66 item from anywhere but it’s been worth the wait — because Diamond Select’s new Robin statue, which was first mentioned at Toy Fair 10 months ago, is here:

The statue, which measures about 10 inches tall, is designed to stand on his own if you happen to have a particular affinity for the Boy Wonder, or in tandem with the previously released Batman statue.

Barry Bradfield’s concept illustration.

Designed by Barry Bradfield and sculpted by Jean St. Jean, the statue gets high marks for its fealty to Burt Ward’s build and outfit, down to the rivets and stitching on the front of his chest. The red tunic is rich and is set off nicely by the satin-gold cape and green sleeves and trunks. The gloves have that appropriately leathery look.

Another great touch is the tights, which appear to bunch up just so, around the knees and ankles.

The crucial part, of course, is the face and this Robin definitely looks like Burt Ward, even if he is a tad cartoony in the translation. Diamond’s statues and busts have sometimes idealized the actors’ likenesses but this is certainly a solid rendition.

I suppose the big question now is what’s next. For most merchandising companies, the modern Batman ’66 wave has long crested, with final touches to various lines here and there.

Diamond has already produced more than a dozen busts, props, banks and other items — and there are now five statues, including Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman and Joker.

I’m still hopeful that we’ll get a couple more busts (and more importantly, Riddler and Penguin statues) but if this is it for Diamond, they’re going out on a — dare I say it — Holy High Note!

The 1/6-scale Robin resin statue lists for $150 and is due 12/13. But, as always, shop around folks.

  1. If detail means so much that they would capture the tights bunching up around the boy wonder’s knees, then I would imagine that the likeness of Burt Ward also means something. Unfortunately the face sculpt is a complete disaster here. Either do a comic book boy wonder or dare to get the face correct. My guess is that they were far enough along in the sculpt that it was too difficult to start over, so they just splashed some white paint into his mouth area and called it good. Too bad, especially since Diamond Select is known for their accuracy and awesome likenesses. TAKEAWAY: If you’re going to charge $150 for a 1966 Robin statue, please make sure it resembles the actor.
