The Fabulous Fun of FILMATION’s SUPERBOY Cartoons

A FILMATION FILES Special!

Life is great for comics fans, y’know? The sheer volume of material that’s available — vintage, new, re-release, repro, you name it — it’s all out there.

Mostly. Spoiled fans like me wish that cartoons like Filmation’s 1960s Superboy were available on disc and streaming. Sadly, it’s not the case. It’s most likely because of the ever-complicated rights over the Kal-El Boy of Steel, but it still is frustrating because these are some of the most fun DC cartoons from Filmation’s repertoire.

Basically, the Superboy cartoons are shorts that ran along with The New Adventures of Superman, with Bob Hastings as young Clark Kent and featuring an always charming Krypto.

We’ve discussed them before, but this week, they’re the subject of the latest episode of Anthony Desiato’s Digging for Kryptonite podcast. Anthony graciously had me on as a guest and we talked about the few cartoons you can find online, mostly on YouTube, and what makes them work.

So click here for a listen, or download the episode wherever you find your finest podcasts.

  1. I was 10 when those shows aired, and believe it or not, the geometrical creature in VISITOR FROM THE EARTH’S CORE scared me badly enough to stick with me all these years. But it proved to be a mom looking for its young! Wonder which came first, the Visitor or STAR TREK’s underground Horta?

  3. As a pre-schooler, these were my gateway to comic books (wouldn’t learn of those until first grade when talking to a fellow pupil about Superman and Batman). I liked the Superman and Batman adventures, but I loved Superboy — probably because of Krypto the Superdog. It’s too bad they didn’t feature Supergirl in the Superman episodes — then I probably would have been hard-pressed to pick a favorite. I absolutely feel these need to be released. I think they were on the DC Universes streaming service at some point, but may have been taken down since.
