Marvel to Celebrate 80 Years With MARVEL COMICS #1000

Kind of a stretch but pretty cool nonetheless…

1939’s Marvel Comics #1

Marvel Comics on Friday announced Marvel Comics #1000 – a special one-shot celebrating the company’s 80th anniversary.

The issue, due in August, will feature no less than 80 creative teams, including superstars past and present, such as Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, George Perez, Mark Waid, Chris Samnee and Jeff Lemire.

Oh, and there’s a brilliant cover by Alex Ross showing off the biggest stars the House of Ideas has to offer, in some of their most recognizable poses:

Marvel didn’t reveal too many details – such as page count, pricing and what the different creators will be producing — but Al Ewing will be writing a framing sequence for the issue. Don’t be surprised if there’s a metric ton of variant covers, too.

Anyway, it’s a pretty neat idea, though calling a celebratory one-shot Marvel Comics #1000 is a definite cheat – one that’s clearly designed to draft off of DC’s more fully earned Action Comics #1000 and Detective Comics #1000 extravaganzas.

But, hey, it looks like a hell of an issue – at least conceptually – so keep a look out for more details as August approaches.

  1. Marvel’s showmanship has always rubbed me the wrong way, and this is no exception. The latest swipe from “the house of DC’s stolen ideas” has some great talent, but I still won’t pick it up. And also: no Fantastic Four members on the cover?

    • No FF is a big miss. I also think this is one of Ross’ lesser efforts. And, I almost always love his craft.

    • I’m with you, Wilson. Where the heck are the Fantastic Four? It’s deplorable the way Marvel has turned their back on their founding family because they aren’t a big money-maker.

  2. Well gee, as long as we’re just making up imaginary numbers, why not trump DC by going them a thousand or two better — say, MARVEL COMICS #2000 (or even #3000)? I’m sure they can point to at least 2,999 previous “Marvel comics” that they’ve published, so it’s still totally legit, right? Talk about your shamelessly transparent marketing stunts… !
