HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Justice League Unlimited: Hocus Pocus, DC. Another collection of DC’s original stories set in the animated JLU continuity. I can never get enough of these.

Legion of Super-Heroes: Before the Darkness, DC. Late 1970s to early 1980s is my favorite period for Legion of Super-Heroes, and this new series of hardcovers will collect them nicely. (Dan adds: Includes the never-before-reprinted miniseries Secrets of the Legion of Super-Heroes, scripted by our pal and columnist Paul Kupperberg!)

Manhunter by Archie Goodwin and Walter Simonson Deluxe Edition, DC. Goodwin and Simonson’s Manhunter should be in everyone’s library. A Bronze Age classic.

Luke Cage Epic Collection: Retribution, Marvel. Get in on the ground floor with Luke Cage’s first Epic Collection – including his origin and early adventures. Sweet Christmas!

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Amazing Spider-Man #101 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. Morbius! Six-armed Spider-Man! Roy Thomas! Gil Kane!

Archie 80th Anniversary Jumbo Comics Digest #1, Archie. Featuring Crisis on the Riverdale Earths. Seriously! (Click here for an EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW.)

Back Issue #125, TwoMorrows. Editor Michael Eury’s latest spotlights creator-owned comics, with a particular emphasis on the career of Matt Wagner. (Click here for more info.)

Superman In the Fifties, DC. Last week it was Wonder Woman in the Fifties, featuring never-reprinted stories of the Amazing Amazon. This week, it’s a re-release of a 2002 collection of Man of Steel tales. Here’s hoping that DC will be bringing back the rest of their decade trades from about 20 years ago. Love that Michael Cho cover — lifted from an Action Comics #1000 variant — too.

  1. Such a dark day when that era of the LSHs went away. They were at their best!

  2. The early Luke Cage books are terrific and really capture the feel of 1970’s NYC and the blaxploitation era of filmmaking.

  4. I am thrilled that Stan Sakai’s Usage Yojimbo is finally getting more attention paid to it-this week in Back Issue. It is a consistent joy to read, reread, and share Sensei Sakai’s samurai opus. Well worth reading, studying, and exploring Japan through the eyes and experiences of this rabbit ronin.

  5. Even though I read the issues collected last year, I cannot pass up on buying a Legion collection. I’ve never read that Manhunter story and I may need to pick up those JLU collections – they look so fun!

Got that Back Issue in the mail today!

  6. Does anyone have the new Superman in the 1950s yet? Is there additional content that wasn’t in the original release or has just the cover changed? I couldn’t find a page count on any of the listings I’ve seen for the book.

    Thanks in advance.

    • I’ve not seen a hard copy but the story selection lines up, as far as I can tell. If anyone has more intel, chime in!
