13 COVERS: A JOE GIELLA Birthday Celebration

One of my all-time favorite inkers turns 89.

Simply put, Joe Giella helped craft the New Look Batman of the ’60s. He and Murphy Anderson were the go-to inkers on Carmine Infantino’s striking Batman and Detective covers and I have many fond memories of poring over them as I accumulated a healthy collection of back issues as Young Dan in the ’70s. (He also did plenty of interiors, of course.)

Giella was born June 27, 1928, and remains one of the last links to the Golden and Silver ages.

Here’s this year’s 13 COVERS salute. All of them are penciled by Infantino and inked by Giella.

  1. This was the era I grew up with Batman in, the Silver Age. I later loved Neal Adams and Jim Aparo and Dick Giordano but these covers give me a warm feeling and a smile.
