REVIEWS! Three Books We Dig This Week!

Jen King picks ’em…

Victorie City #1 IDW

(W) Keith Carmack, (A) Vincent Nappi, (CA) Ben Templesmith

From the 44 Flood imprint, this first issue in a four-issue series feels dangerous. Detective Ness is in a bad spot, being the only clean cop in town. The other problem is that he is sure to meet the seriously deranged baddie that has a penchant for murder. Enjoy the artistic style that is just as dirty as the city they live in.

Monstress #3, Image

(W) Marjorie M. Liu (A/CA) Sana Takeda

If you haven’t started reading this series, jump in now. Selling through all of it’s initial print runs should give you an idea of just how good this book really is. The main character, Maika, has a (quite C’thuluish) monster living inside of her. That’s all you need to know to catch up. There is a race to find all of the pieces of a mask with a mysterious purpose. Not since Colleen Doran’s space-opera series A Distant Soil has there been such beautiful costume design in a comic.

Strayer #1, AfterShock

(W) Justin Jordan (A/CA) Juan Gedeon

Strayer is an interesting character. He reminds me of a young, cocky Hercules but he’s a grizzled, bearded version. All vim and vigor, he makes good on his claims to be able to kill anything, but he needs payment. When some neon rune-covered woman shows up and demands he help her, he decides to pass, but is it that easy?
