MARV WOLFMAN Has a New DC Story in the Works — and It’s a Secret

Hmmm. Whatever could it be?

The great Marv Wolfman has a story in Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man #50 coming up in May (fancy details here) but he also evidently has a new tale coming for DC too — and it’s a secret.

Marv posted this on Facebook earlier this week:

I want to stress this from the outset: I have zero intel on what this story might be. None whatsoever. But I can tell you what I hope it will be: a Nightwing story celebrating his 40th anniversary.

Y’see, said anniversary is actually later this month — Tales of the Teen Titans #44 came out March 20, 1984. (More on that soon.)

Thing is, DC, which is well aware of its history and loves its anniversaries, hasn’t said boo about it. Which makes me think they’re playing a waiting game. And it’s not like they ignore Nightwing: the current, award-winning run written by Tom Taylor is one of most popular in comics right now — and deservedly so. (It’s my all-time favorite Nightwing run, actually.)

So, here’s my educated guess — and again, I could be 100 percent off-base. This isn’t me floating rumors like some sites do:

We already know Bruno Redondo is returning to Nightwing interiors in May’s Issue #114 for the start of a big, five-part finale to his run with Taylor, set to end in September. My take is that the finale will be an oversize issue and that Wolfman will have a Nightwing story in it. (Marv and George Perez — Nightwing’s co-creators though not Dick Grayson’s, natch — make cameos as pizza-shop owners in the series, by the by.) Or perhaps there will be a special 40th anniversary 100-pager.

What would also be cool is if DC published all four parts of the New Teen Titans classic The Judas Contract — which included Nightwing’s debut — as Facsimile Editions come September, just as they have with Batman: Year One and as they will with Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Or I could be way off base and Marv wrote a Superman story or some such.

What it won’t be is a return to Night Force.
