Sgt. Rock by Joe Kubert Deluxe Edition, DC. I love that this is coming and I love that DC is doing it, period. Joe Kubert was one of the all-time greats, with an enormous legacy, and he deserves this kind of recognition from the publisher with which he was most associated.
Kubert’s centennial is Friday, so the timing for this (and the next two selections) could not be more perfect. For those keeping score at home, the Sgt. Rock stories here are from G.I. Combat #68; Our Army at War #83, #91, #117, #135, #141, #158, #165, #196, #233, and #238; Sgt. Rock #302-304 and #368; Sgt. Rock Special #1; Joe Kubert Presents #5; and Showcase #45. Also includes never-published original artwork and a foreword by his son, artist Andy Kubert.

Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers, DC. Seriously, give DC credit here. Not one. Not two. But three Kubert tributes this week. That’s just plain fantastic. The main cover is, naturally, Sgt. Rock, but a second cover — in foil, no less — was added, and just check it out. (By the way, I’ve noted this before, but I took a weekend class at the Kubert School when I was in high school, and that was how I found out I’d never be a comics artist! Joe did teach us how to draw a really good eye, though. I can still do it.)

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #55, DC. Why do I love this cover? Because Dan Mora drew Ra’s al Ghul as Neal Adams intended — WITHOUT EYEBROWS. That’s actually not a little thing folks, it’s about an artist and his vision, and a very specific, intentional character design choice. So many artists get that wrong. OK, rant over.
I’m really looking forward to this because I’m also a firm believer that Ra’s and Talia are best when they stay on the shelf except for special occasions. I haven’t seen Ra’s in a while, so this is on the money, especially when you consider that World’s Finest takes place in a reformulated Silver/Bronze Age environment — and it looks like during this arc, we’ll get to see the Superman/Ra’s sword duel we didn’t even know we wanted.

The Silver Surfer #7 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. Wrapping up the run of the first seven issues by Lee and Buscema. I’ve been reading these for the first time and can I just say two things? 1) I totally understand why Issue #5 was an award winner. It’s superb. Best so far. 2) Boy, Norrin Radd sure moans a lot.

DC/Marvel: The Cosmic Kiss Caper & Other Stories, DC/Marvel. I heard all of these new DC/Marvel crossovers were good, but I’m buying this for the Gail Simone-written Power Girl/Punisher team-up.
Dan adds: There’s also The Dead of Knight and Other Stories, Marvel/DC. Each book includes the comics put out by those particular publishers (Superman/Spider-Man vs. Spider-Man/Superman, for example), including the digital-only tales, such as The Flash/Fantastic Four (DC) and Thor/Shazam! (Marvel). Both books from both publishers are available in hardcover and paperback.
