Back in June, we told you about DC’s September celebration of the late Joe Kubert’s centennial. There will be a Facsimile Edition of 1969’s DC Special #5, which was devoted to the comics pioneer’s work, and there will be a special issue called Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers #1.
In DC Special #5’s solitication, there was a note about a jam-cover variant, featuring members of the Kubert family and alumni from the famed Kubert School. In addition, there was no final cover for Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers.
Now, however, DC has released both. Dig these:
Contributors to the jam cover include Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Emma Kubert, Jan Duursema, Tom Mandrake, Ron Wagner, Amanda Conner, Rick Veitch, Stephen Bissette, Lee Weeks, Ron Randall, Steve Lieber, and colorist Brad Anderson.
DC Special #5 was curated by Joe Kubert himself, and presents several of his favorite stories. It also includes a lovely, four-page tale about a day in the life of the Kubert family. The Facsimile Edition is due Sept. 16, and features foil and blank sketch-cover variants.
Joe Kubert: 100 Years – A Life in Covers showcases some of the most memorable covers from his remarkable career. He was one of the best at it — especially when it came to his war covers. The collection includes Sgt. Rock, The Brave and the Bold, House of Mystery, Ragman, and more. The issue is also due Sept. 16. (Kubert’s birthdate was Sept. 18, 1926.)
There’s also the previously announced Sgt. Rock by Joe Kubert: Deluxe Edition, a hardcover collection spotlighting many of the artist/writer’s defining stories starring his signature character, co-created with Robert Kanigher.
The $49.99, 352-pager is expected to include stories from G.I. Combat #68; Our Army at War #83, #91, #117, #135, #141, #158, #165, #196, #233, and #238; Sgt. Rock #302-304 and #368; Sgt. Rock Special #1; Joe Kubert Presents #5; and Showcase #45. Plus, never-before-seen original Sgt. Rock artwork and brand-new forewords by artist Andy Kubert and writer Brian Azzarello. (Joe Kubert and Azzarello’s Sgt. Rock: Between Hell and a Hard Place is being re-released in March 2027.)
