FIRST TIME EVER: DC Collects Its ALEX TOTH Stories in a Celebratory Volume

DC Universe by Alex Toth: The Deluxe Edition is coming in 2026…

I can’t tell you how many artists I’ve talked to over the years who cite Alex Toth as an influence. Small wonder: Toth was able to do so much with so little, conveying emotion and atmosphere with a few flicks of the pen.

There are also, of course, all those fans of his animation work, whether we’re talking the Hanna-Barbera heroes or Super Friends.

Given that, I expect the comics cognoscenti will be lining up next year for the first-ever collection DC Universe by Alex Toth: The Deluxe Edition.

Dig the official description:

It will be a hardcover.

DC UNIVERSE BY ALEX TOTH: THE DELUXE EDITION

A Master of Minimalism—Alex Toth’s DC Legacy in One Deluxe Volume

DC Universe by Alex Toth: Deluxe Edition celebrates the legendary artist’s groundbreaking work across decades of DC Comics. From noir-tinged mysteries and war stories to romance, horror, and superhero tales, this collection showcases Toth’s unmatched storytelling and design mastery. Featuring stories from Detective Comics, House of Mystery, The Witching Hour, Our Army at War, Adventure Comics, and more, this deluxe hardcover is a tribute to one of comics’ most influential visual stylists. With over 30 stories spanning the 1940s to the 1990s—including rare pinups and gallery pieces—this is the definitive Toth collection for fans and historians alike.

A few thoughts:

— There’s no issue list included, so we’re left to speculate. I cannot imagine it will not include his fab 1960s Eclipso work in House of Secrets, as well as his classic Black Canary two-parter from 1972’s Adventure Comics #418-419, his framing sequence from 1975’s Limited Collectors’ Edition #C-41, and his Batman story from 1974’s Detective Comics #442.

— This will be a hardcover.

— Standard caveat: The description comes from Penguin Random House’s online catalogue. PRH handles DC in the book market. This hasn’t been formally solicited by DC yet, so nothing is official until it’s official.

  1. I hope they consider a different cover. That one has a redrawn Superman’s face dead center. It’s all I see when I look at it. I don’t have Alex’s work referenced well in my library. This will be a good one to pick up.

  2. I’ll definitely pick this one up, but at 201 pages I can’t help but wish they would dig a little deeper. There is a handful of Golden Age Green Lantern stories by Toth that have never been reprinted. I’d love to see them included in such a volume.

  3. Ironic that a book celebrating Toth and his art (well-deserved and about time) has a redrawn Superman face by another artist on the cover…

  4. Oh wow. This has been at the top of my wish list for years. Toth is, for my money, probably the greatest cartoonist who ever lived. Can’t wait for this (and the new Kickstarter collection of his Zorro stories).

Not sure what’s gotten into DC recently. This plus the Absolute of Man of Steel, the Darwyn Cooke Batman Absolute, the Legends Omnibus, and the Crisis/History of the DC Universe Absolute: They’re finally releasing so many of my wish list. I hope a Hawkworld Omnibus is on the horizon, too (one can hope).

  5. I hope the page count is wrong. It’s too low for a comprehensive collection of Alex Toth’s work. (Personally I hope it has except the aforementioned stories, Green lantern 171 and superman annual 9). It should be at least 400 hundred pages according to the price. I also hope a proper restoration and not oversaturated colors and also the original covers of the stories not drawn by Toth.

    • I remember an Atom/ Flash story from Brave and Bold he drew!

    • If it remains at 201 pages, the “hero” material (including ECLIPSO) is ALL it’ll reprint. Safe to say the SUPERMAN and GREEN LANTERN will be there.

  6. 201 pages? Youve got to be kidding. I want ALL of their Toth! Which would be quite a lot more. And I’d also like the companion Gil Kane volumes, if possible.

  7. Good news to finally have a DC hardcover edition of Toth’s art. But also a little bit disappointing at only 200 pages and the source material seems to mostly include his later stuff. The superhero and mystery/horror already has been reprinted before, just not collected all together. I would have like to see his seldom seen western, sci-fi, earlier stuff from the 50’s.

  8. Yes, 201 pages is not nearly enough to showcase Toth’s work! Just go to Mike’s Amazing Comics site, run a creator search on Alex Toth, then filter for DC and you’ll see what I mean! 201 pages, bah!

  9. Due to all the Golden-Age work he did for DC, Toth worked on 226 stories (2,227 pages) for the company.

Twenty of the stories were licensed properties, so that leaves 206 stories.

I would love for the omnibus to have all of them since that would mean we would get his Johnny Thunder (Western), Sierra Smith, Molly Adams, and Streak/Rex, the Wonder Dog stories.

DC needs to collect ALL of the Silver-Age Eclipso stories in a color volume.

  12. My favorite Toth’s are his DC Western stories, Johnny Thunder, in particular.
