Dig This Groovy — and Offbeat — NEAL ADAMS HAWKMAN Painting

Earth-One, Earth-Two… or Earth-Neal?

Because I’m such a Neal Adams fan, sometimes I just go to the NealAdamsStore.com website to see what there is to see.

And what did I see on my latest visit?

This fabulous Hawkman painting:

I seriously love this. And do you want to know why, besides the obvious coolness of Adams drawing the Winged Wonder?

It’s not just that Hawkman is running and preparing for battle on the ground — it’s that Adams drew Hawkman’s wings as if they’re a cape.

Here’s a similar version he once did:

Why? Who knows? But it’s a surprisingly badass look. And it’s not like Neal didn’t know the difference. He drew one of the most famous Hawkman images ever:

These are the kinds of things that can make my day.

Oh, and you can buy the painting too. For $2,000, it’s all yours.

  1. One of many missed opportunities is we never got to see a Neal Adams-penciled Hawkman story. He clearly had an affinity for the character. The story goes that Marshall Rogers was working at the Continuity Studios on one of his first professional jobs for DC, the Hawkman/Calculator back-up that ran in Detective Comics #467. Supposedly he left some penciled pages on his drawing table, and when Rogers came in the next day, Adams had inked all of Rogers’ Hawkman figures, just for fun!

  2. The pose and that initial sketch looks like a repurposed version of the pencil sketch from the first “Art of Neal Adams” book from 1975, except in the original he’s holding a football in his left hand. The TOC says “Falcon: On assignment for PRO, a sports magazine. Neal was to take the name of Football Teams and create a super-hero to represent each tem. Here we see the sketch for the Atlanta Falcons—a series of these are in the works for PRO magazine. ”

  3. well, that Neal Adams painting really doesn’t do it for me–no offense meant. It barely looks like his style (except the character’s right leg and the left leg is very…odd looking. Hey, I know we can’t help to love what we love…

  4. Whether it is depicted as a cape of wings or wings off the back, why does Hawkman need a second set of wings on the headgear? I say that and I love the Bronze Age Hawkman. Though I think I prefer the original cloth mask as seen in All-Stars JSA during the ’70s the best.
