Dig These DETECTIVE COMICS #1000 Variant Covers

A decade-by-decade celebration…

One of the coolest parts of DC’s Action Comics #1000 celebration was the issue’s decade-by-decade variant covers by some of the industry’s top talents.

Naturally, Detective Comics #1000 — due in March — is following suit.

Check these out:

Main cover by Jim Lee

1930s, by Steve Rude

1940s, by Bruce Timm

1950s, by Michael Cho

1960s, by Jim Steranko

1970s, by the late Bernie Wrightson

1980s, by Frank Miller

1990s, by Tim Sale

2000s, by Jock

2010s, by Greg Capullo

Some terrific work there, though the 1960s one looks nothing like the 1960s, which is too bad.

Other than that, it’s a solid selection.

DC also announced the creative teams for the various stories in the issue, including:

— Kevin Smith and Jim Lee
— Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev
— Warren Ellis and Becky Cloonan
— Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen
— Denny O’Neil and Steve Epting (a sequel to O’Neil’s 1976 classic There’s No Hope in Crime Alley!)
— Christopher Priest and Neal Adams
— Geoff Johns and Kelley Jones
— Tom King, Tony Daniel and Joëlle Jones
— Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
— James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez

As previously noted, the issue will also feature the in-continuity debut of the video-game character Arkham Knight, for those who are into such things.

  1. Why is it O’Neil & Adams can never do a story together anymore? This would have been the perfect time to churn out 6 to 12 pages…

  3. Rude, Cho and Timm are the best. All of them are pretty good, except for those by the ailing Frank Miller and Jim Lee. It’s disappointing that they are using Lee’s stale work for the “main” cover art. He really seems to phone-in a lot of his DC work.

I’ll be shocked if we don’t see a Neal Adams variant as well as a typical homage to the #27 cover pose. Seeing as they dug something up by the late Bernie Wrightson, it would have made sense to include at least one of Kane’s ghosts, maybe Robinson or Sprang.
