CATWOMAN WEEK: Closing out the celebration with a modern master…
—
Welcome to CATWOMAN WEEK! One of the greatest characters in comics history debuted 85 years ago, in Batman #1, on April 24, 1940 — and we’re celebrating with a series of features saluting the Feline Fatale. Beginning Sunday, it’ll be JOKER WEEK! For the complete index of CATWOMAN WEEK features, click here.

As I noted a week ago when we featured Darwyn Cooke, Catwoman has had so many looks over her 85 years that it’s hard to pick a definitive one. Our pal Anthony Durso did a great job of ranking her TOP 13 COSTUMES for her 80th anniversary five years ago, but for this year’s CATWOMAN WEEK, I wanted to do something slightly different — highlight a handful of her essential artists.
Normally, I’d do a TOP 13 list of them, but I was more drawn to the idea of doing deeper dives on individual illustrators. So we also did Jim Balent, who defined Catwoman in the 1990s, and here we spotlight Adam Hughes, one of the greatest artists working today.
So here are 13 pulchritudinous covers to close out CATWOMAN WEEK:

The neat thing about these is she’s sexy, yes, but she also looks like a real person. Not like so many 90s comics in which female characters look like they were drawn from the same pattern.

Gorgeous stuff, and I’m getting a real Audrey Hepburn vibe from issue #74.

Adam Hughes draws beautiful women, to be certain, but he also conveys the personality and expressions of the characters better than most. The joy in his Wonder Woman is not found in the slyness of his Catwoman.

I’ll be forthright and mention that’s actually one of my least favorite Catwoman costumes. But AH! really did make those covers look great!
