13 GROOVY BATMAN COVERS: A Sheldon Moldoff Birthday Celebration

I love these…

The late Sheldon Moldoff — born 104 years ago, on April 14, 1920 — is inextricably linked to Batman’s “wacky” period of the ’50s and ’60s. But it wasn’t all monsters, mites, aliens and apes.

And, y’know, monsters, mites, aliens and apes are pretty damn cool and those stories are a blast. But there are plenty of Moldoff covers that I just plain love that don’t feature any of those.

So dig this 13 COVERS birthday salute, all from Batman. Next year we can go back to Detective Comics.

(Psst, look for more Moldoff grooviness in this week’s MORRISON MONDAYS.)

Right on.

Moldoff inks. Had this as a kid and loved it. It’s still among the oldest comics in my collection.

Moldoff inks. The last Batman cover before the 1964 New Look.

Joe Giella inks. The first Batman cover of the New Look.

  1. You have to admire an artist who can draw anything that’s thrown at him eg Batman and Robin in bat winged jet pack chasing pigeons with a diamond strapped to their legs
