13 COVERS: A WAYNE BORING Birthday Salute

Wayne Boring was born June 5, 1905 — 111 years ago!

Boring was the great Metropolis bridge between Joe Shuster and Curt Swan. That’s not to downplay the contributions of artists like Al Plastino or Fred Ray or the many other terrific Superartists of the Golden and early Silver ages, but Boring — like Dick Sprang on Batman — has become shorthand for an era of artistic style. IDW calls it the Atomic Age, and that’s a pretty fitting descriptor, if you ask me (click here).

Wayne Boring died in 1987 but his Superman will always stand the test of time as a symbol of postwar American stoicism.

  1. Thanks for the tribute. I always liked Wayne Boring, possibly because A ) he was very good and B ) he used to do the Superman strip in the comic section, so it was what I was accustomed to enjoying.
