TARZAN: THE BUSCEMA YEARS Omnibus Coming in 2023

Marvel goes Dynamite…

Dig this little tidbit I found in my interwebs travels: Dynamite this summer will be publishing Tarzan: The Buscema Years Omnibus, reprinting Marvel’s 1970s, 29-issue run starring the Lord of the Jungle.

Check out the Amazon listing:

TARZAN: THE BUSCEMA YEARS OMNIBUS

By Roy Thomas, David Anthony Kraft, Bill Mantlo, John Buscema, Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson

Beginning in June 1977, the creative team of Roy Thomas and John Buscema astonished readers with perhaps the most spectacular escapades of Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fabled Lord of the Jungle, ever captured on the four-color page! In the Mighty Marvel Manner, “Big John” delivered peril, romance, and heroics month-in and month-out, culminating in the ten-part “Blood Money and Human Bondage” saga, an epic that saw an artistic passing of the torch to his younger brother, Sal Buscema — who would continue to visualize the feral hero’s exploits until the series’ thrilling final chapter in October 1979. Tarzan: The Buscema Years celebrates two of the greatest comic artists of all time, collecting in its entirety their classic 29-issue run of Tarzan (plus all three Tarzan Annuals), a massive tome bursting with mind-blowing thrills on every page!

A few thoughts:

John Buscema pencils, Neal Adams inks

— The cover has not been released so I pulled some placeholder art from the series.

— The 696-page hardcover is due July 11, 2023, and lists for $99.99.

— Why is Dynamite publishing this? They own the Tarzan rights now.

— Standard caveat: As far as I can tell, this has not been officially solicited by Dynamite yet, so anything can change. Keep checking back at 13th Dimension for updates.

    • Does Marvel even have the rights to publish Tarzan comics currently?

      • Marvel hasn’t had the rights since the 70’s. Dark Horse has the rights to publish comics with the word “Tarzan” in the title. Dynamite can publish comics featuring the character, but his name cannot be in the title. Hence the current Dynamite series entitled “Lord of the Jungle”. The fact that this omnibus has “Tarzan” in its title is likely what’s causing such ongoing delays.

  1. Unfortunately, I am skeptical that this will actually see the light of day. It’s been mentioned several times over the years, and that Amazon listing has had the release date moved forward several times. I certainly hope it actually comes out this time, but I’m not holding my breath.

  2. Dynamite’s been teasing this for a few years now so don’t believe it till it happens. It’s on the same level as Atari Force collections.

  3. I’m also extremely skeptical about this book ever being released. Dynamite originally solicited it some time in 2016, and I preordered it at Amazon way back in mid-2017 – and then kept getting periodic e-mails informing me that the publication date is being pushed back, until I got this message from Amazon in July 2019:
“Due to a lack of availability, we will not be able to obtain the following item from your order. We’ve canceled the item and apologize for the inconvenience.”
It seems to me that this is a just a zombie listing; I occasionally see it mentioned at various comics-related sites (like this one) and forums, e.g., early last year someone at the Comics Round Table posted the Amazon link, which had an August 2022 release date. Needless to say, the book was not, in fact, published last year.
