SNEAK PEEK: The DETECTIVE COMICS #1000 DELUXE EDITION Hardcover

Alan Grant returns to Batman — with Anarky and the Ventriloquist. PLUS: A look at Robert Venditti’s rare Bat-tale…

March was dominated in these parts by our coverage of Detective Comics #1000 and Batman’s 80th Anniversary, including our TOP 13 BATMAN COUNTDOWN — a line-up of the Caped Crusader’s greatest stories, as selected by a blue-ribbon panel that included the likes of Neal Adams and Paul Levitz. (Click here. You’ll dig it.)

But wait, there’s more! (As they say.)

On June 12, DC is releasing the Detective Comics #1000 Deluxe Edition hardcover, which includes not only the stories in the regular edition, but a gallery of covers and pages of bonus material.

Cover by Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair

Cool enough, but there are also two stories that have been added to the package: ’80s/’90s Bat-scribe Alan Grant’s return to Gotham and Robert Venditti’s take on the Dark Knight, the latter of which was previously seen in the rare Walmart-exclusive Detective Comics: Batman 80th Anniversary Giant.

Grant’s story features Anarky and the Ventriloquist, both of whom he co-created with Norm Breyfogle. (John Wagner was also a Ventriloquist co-creator.) Sadly, Breyfogle died last year and I don’t know whether he was pegged for this gig or not. (If you have that intel, do tell!) Instead, Grant’s joined by penciller Scott McDaniel, a popular Bat-artist in his own right and one whose style echoes Breyfogle’s.

Venditti, meanwhile, is joined by line artist Stephen Segovia — and we’ve got a SNEAK PEEK at both stories for you, right here:

The Detective Comics #1000 Deluxe Edition hardcover is due June 12. It lists for $19.99.
