Here’s a recent commission where I was asked to take the classic cover of Ghost Rider #6, from 1974, and change it to Goose Rider! (This was, coincidentally, before Ryan Gosling was cast as the flame-headed biker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.)
The original cover was drawn by the-always-great John Romita:
The person making the request asked me to draw in the style of Steve Mellor. Back in 1983, Mellor drew a Goose Rider story in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1. (Whew! Long name.) He also drew the cover to Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1. I bought Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 when it first hit the stands.
I stuck very close to Mellor’s art from his GR story. I don’t know much about Steve Mellor. Aside from Marvel Tails, he also worked for Crazy magazine, which was also published by Marvel. He had a unique style, as seen by the page below. Sorry, I don’t know its source. You’ve let me down Mr. Internet. (If you know, please tell us in the comments!)
He also worked on The Ren & Stimpy Show in the early ’90’s.
One last thing you may have noticed too: As I drew Mellor’s Goose Rider, I couldn’t help but think of Smiley Bone from the Bone comic. I’m sure it’s a coincidence, but they could be brothers!
