JOHN BUSCEMA’s SILVER SURFER Artisan Edition Coming From IDW

Traverse the spaceways with Big John…

As we reported recently, John Buscema’s Marvel Heroes Artist’s Edition is coming this fall from IDW and Marvel, featuring several complete stories (including The Avengers and Sub-Mariner), plus art from his runs on The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thor, Sub-Mariner and more.

But there’s a groovy little surprise coming in early 2022, as well — John Buscema’s Silver Surfer Artisan Edition, a more affordable version of the out-of-print John Buscema’s Silver Surfer Artist’s Edition from 2014.

Dig the official description from an Amazon listing:

John Buscema’s Silver Surfer Artisan Edition

Considered by many to be one of the pinnacles of Silver Age comic book art — now presented in IDW’s critically acclaimed Artisan Edition format — you’ve never truly seen Buscema’s art until now!

John Buscema’s innovative drawing on Marvel’s Silver Surfer is presented in IDW’s Artisan Edition format. Collecting three complete issues (issues #5, #6, and #8) from the acclaimed original run written by Stan Lee. As a special bonus — this book will have four foldouts featuring eight oversized covers.

An essential component of the House of Ideas, John Buscema’s talented hand graced the pages of Marvel’s most iconic characters for over four decades, working on The Avengers, Thor, The Fantastic Four, and the Amazing Spider-Man just to name a few.

As with all Artisan Edition books, nearly every page in this volume has been scanned from the original art, enabling the reader to clearly see all the little nuances that make original art unique and fascinating — blue pencil notations, margin notes, whiteout, and so much more. This will be a must-have for all fans and students of classic comic art!

A few thoughts:

— The Artisan Edition, a 184-page softcover, lists for $39.99. It’s due Feb. 22, 2022.

— What’s the difference between an Artist’s Edition and an Artisan Edition? The former is a high-end hardcover that reprints the original art in its original size. The latter is essentially a less expensive reprint that’s smaller in scale — though still plenty large so that you can explore every nook and cranny of the art. (In this case, the Silver Surfer Artist’s Edition listed for $125 and is selling for significantly higher on the secondary market.

— There’s been some other cool Buscema news of late: The Art of John Buscema, from FPG, is also due in 2022 and the artist’s Conan the Barbarian movie adaptation will be reprinted for the first time, in November 2021.

Standard caveat: As far as I can tell, this has not been solicited yet, so nothing is official until it’s official. Even then, things can change. Just keep coming to 13th Dimension for updates.

  1. Anyone know why IDW often publish Marvel material? I.e. why doesn’t Marvel print these ( and other things such as the child-friendly STAR WARS movie adaptations ) themselves? Thanks.

  2. Yep…the artisans editions always seemed to make more sense. Softcover is good idea also. Now if IDW would do the same with the ec artist editions. Thanks.
