A DESPOP TUESDAYS birthday salute to the late, great SEAN CONNERY…

One of the many things Des Taylor and I have in common is our love of James Bond. He watches Goldfinger — which is his favorite — and You Only Live Twice regularly, while I frequently spend my Sunday nights rotating through Dr. No, Thunderball, and YOLT, with others sprinkled in depending on my mood.
With the late, great Sean Connery’s birthday upon us — he was born 96 years ago, on Aug. 15, 1930 — I asked Des why he so favored the third big-screen Bond adventure.
“Goldfinger is the quintessenial Bond!” he practically shouted. “This is the one that started it all, every thing you love about James Bond started in this film. The car — introducing the most iconic car in film history — there would be no Batmobile without this badboy.
“The opening action sequence… and obviously Pussy Galore — my favorite Bond Girl, Honor Blackman was a no-shit-taking badass. I saw her as a kid and it changed my life!” he laughed.

There’s been a bunch of Bond comics and adaptations over the years, but precious few have drawn from the movies. I gotta tell you, I would pay good money for a line of prestige comics that adapted the best of the Bond flicks — most notably Connery’s first five.
And I know just who should draw 007…

… and all his lovely co-stars:

Hell, Des is even a Brit. What more could you want? (And don’t bring me down with those pesky likeness rights issues.)
Miss Moneypenny, please place a call to Ian Fleming Publications… and Jeff “Don’t Call Me Blofeld” Bezos.

DES TAYLOR is the man behind creator-owned comic properties Scarlett Couture, The Vesha Valentine Story, The Trouble With Katie Rogers and a new property in the works The Blue Lotus Strikes. His client list includes DC Comics, La Perla, FHM, Cosmopolitan, Universal Music, ITV Studios America and many more. When he’s not working on his own properties or churning out commissions, Des spends his spare time… working some more, hating Arsenal and raising his two baby daughters, Scarlett and Leia-May.

I’ll admit I don’t see it. But either way, it doesn’t take away from Des’ spot on rendition.
