The HUNTRESS’ Origin Issue to Get Facsimile Edition Release

EXCLUSIVE: DC Super-Stars #17 gets re-released in April — with ads, bonus features and all!

Oh, this is a fun one.

A few hours ago, DC put out the news that it’ll be publishing the Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular in April — and you can click here for the details.

But in tandem with that, the publisher will also be producing the DC Super-Stars #17 Facsimile Edition, featuring the 1977 origin story of the Earth-Two Batman and Catwoman’s daughter, the Huntress.

Dig this EXCLUSIVE LOOK at the solicitation info, which will be officially released Friday:

DC SUPER-STARS #17 FACSIMILE EDITION
Written by PAUL LEVITZ, DENNIS O’NEIL, and JACK C. HARRIS
Art by JOE STATON, BOB LAYTON, MIKE GRELL, JUAN ORTIZ, and others
Cover by JOE STATON and BOB LAYTON
This 1977 issue features the debut of Huntress, the untold origin of Green Arrow, and an early adventure of the Legion of Super-Heroes! Offered to coincide with the Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1.
ON SALE 04.08.20
$4.99 US | 48 PAGES | FC | DC

A few thoughts:

— The Huntress was created by writer Levitz, penciller Staton and inker Layton, and her first appearance was kind of a twofer: DC Super Stars #17 featured her origin/first solo story and All-Star Comics #69 introduced her to the Justice Society. Both issues came out about the same time, according to the Grand Comics Database.

— Since this is a Facsimile Edition, you also get the other stories: an O’Neil/Grell Green Arrow origin story and the Legion’s first case, by Harris and Ortiz. There are some cool features too, including Huntress concept art and — wait for it — a Wonder Woman Twinkies ad!

— Price comparison time: A high-grade, unslabbed copy of an original DC Super-Stars #17 recently sold on eBay for a little over $150. The Facsimile Edition will run you five bucks. That’s a deal.

  1. Looks like I’ll actually have to pick up a facsimile edition. THIS is the Huntress I wish we could see more of. The post-Crisis incarnation has never lived up to the origin, heritage, and character of Helena Wayne. DC’s upcoming reprint of the Darknight Daughter collection misses the mark; we need an omnibus or trade series reprinting all of Helena Wayne’s adventures. If only the pre-crisis Earth-2 heroes could return for all new adventures (with old school art of course – “photorealistic style” is garish).

    • Completely agree. I already own “Darknight Daughter” – why would I buy this? But, I would definitely buy a complete collection of all her stories.

When I say “her,” I mean Helena Wayne. The Huntress is Helena Wayne…period.

      • All of Helena Wayne’s stories ARE in the “Darknight Daughter” collection — It’s “complete” except for her adventures with the JSA and Infinity Inc. (and Crisis on Infinite Earths), which are in their own collection.

        • actually, some of the later HUNTRESS Wonder Woman Back-up stories are NOT in the collection.

        • I believe it’s missing the Brave & Bold stories such as “Batman’s Last Christmas”

      • The Facsimile Editions are a different experience than trades. If you’re just into the stories, that’s one thing. But people dig the Facsimiles because they are a replica of a key issue. It’s a fun thing on the face of it and very frequently the originals are so expensive, that getting an FE is the only way to see a story in the way it was originally presented.

Also, a lot of fans who do have the originals don’t necessarily want to handle them. An FE can get bent, torn, whatever and it’s not a big deal.

        I totally get the appeal.

  2. I’ve been tempted to get some of the facsimile releases but couldn’t see buying one when I had the original. THIS though…! A DC SUPER-STARS issue and with the origin of the Huntress no less…! It’s going to be hard to pass up.

    • So Helena Wayne / Huntress adventures in Batman Family 17, Brave & Bold 184, Wonder Woman 296-299 and 301-321 still need to find a way to be reprinted, please.
