Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension
Detective Comics #359 Facsimile Edition, DC. A second release of this particular Facsimile Edition, timed to Barbara Gordon’s 60th anniversary later this year (and probably the new Barbara Gordon: Breakout series, too). The last one came out 6 1/2 years ago, and this one’s a big improvement, given that the UPC symbol is on the back. Not only that, there’s a fab go-go-check-bedecked logo sketch variant and a foil version. Whee!

Groovy!

Mad #600, DC. Oh, we went over all this Sunday. Click here and here. (Our pal Kerry Callen has a feature in it!)

—
The Silver Surfer #4 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. One of the all-time Marvel classics, by Stan Lee and John Buscema. I bet the cover looks great in foil, too. Also: I’m not big on Facsimile Edition variants but Chris Campana’s has a lot to recommend it.

—
616: Earth’s Mightiest Day Marvel Mystery Bag Featuring Doctor Doom, Marvel. I’m too tired to explain this again. Click here for the whole shebang — including Facsimile Editions of The Avengers #25, Fantastic Four #258, and Iron Man #149.

—
Superman: Action Comics Vol. 1 — The Boy of Steel, DC. Trade paperback collecting the first six issues of Mark Waid’s run giving us his take on Superboy, with perfectly paired art by Skylar Patridge. I’ve always preferred a Clark Kent who didn’t put on the costume until adulthood, but Waid makes the whole notion of the Boy of Steel plausible.

—
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #52, DC. Continuing the trip to Skartaris.

—
The Amazing Spider-Man #31, Marvel. Another Alex Ross Marvel Dimensions variant.

There’s also one for X-Men United #4:

—
The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection — The Goblin’s Last Stand, Marvel. I’m not sure how many times this has been printed but it doesn’t matter: I’m morally obligated to mention it every time.

—
Concrete: Stars Over Sand #1, Dark Horse. Wow! One of the great 1980s independent comics is back with this five-parter by Paul Chadwick.

—
Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension
Koshchei the Deathless Omnibus, Dark Horse. Always admired Mike Mignola’s dedication to long-form storytelling, as with this epic take on one of Hellboy’s greatest foes.

—
DC Finest: Robin — The Origin of Robin, DC. Silver and Bronze Age tales of the Boy Wonder, some collected for the first time!

Dan adds: I have all these stories in the original comics, but I’m still getting this for ease of access and reading. These are really fun stories. The title, by the way, comes from 1969’s Batman #213, which gave us an excellent retelling of Robin’s beginning by E. Nelson Bridwell, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito.
—
The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Marvel. Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber’s sharply funny Spidey-villain team, now back in print.

“DC Finest: Robin — The Origin of Robin” Is the only one on the list that I absolutely must get.

For those who don’t want to gamble on blind bags: I’ve already found two out of three of the 616 Day facsimiles on eBay for very reasonable prices.

It’s sad. I would have gladly purchased 5-6 copies of each and instead I’m getting none. If they do this again, I’ll assume it means it made sense. But I struggle to see it.

I really don’t mind blind bags when done right. Image just did it with the release of M.A.S.K. last week and the blind bags included 1) a recap material “origins” issue, 2) an advance copy of the second issue, and 3) a surprise introduction of ROM to the Energon universe. Also, the surprise books are incredibly easy to find (they’re on cardstock covers and can be easily felt in the bag).
I’m absolutely fine with Marvel doing a surprise variety of comics in the bags. The $14.99 price is cost prohibitive. (Image’s bags are $6.) I’d be more willing to do this if they were cheaper.
I got real lucky and found the Iron Man $149 facsimile for like $6 with shipping. I’m just trying to find the Avengers facsimile for a good price at this point.
