HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

The Art of the Mighty Thor, Dark Horse/Marvel. Constructive criticism time: Dark Horse started its Bullpen Books line with Marvel two years ago, and I gotta say, the publicity for it has been seriously lacking. We got The Art of The Amazing Spider-Man first, then The Art of the Fantastic Four and neither has made much of a blip.

This week is the Thor edition, featuring original and published art by Jack Kirby and Walt Simonson, among many others. And it’s 10″ x 14″, which is close to treasury size. The 200-page hardcover lists for $59.99. Since we believe in giving the people what they want, check out a SNEAK PEEK over here.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout #2, DC. Read the first issue. I liked it. Taking this one issue by issue.

Comic Book Creator #44 and RetroFan #45, TwoMorrows. Any kind of Carmine Infantino spotlight and I am there. Plus, I plan to sit on the porch with a Slurpee, my 1976 baseball cards and dig into RF’s Bicentennial issue. (TwoMorrows also has Alter Ego #200 — Roy Thomas spotlights himself — and Back Issue #168, in which there be dragons.)

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #23, DC. The only reason this is getting reprinted is the rare Adam Hughes variant cover from 2006. Fine by me. The original costs a ton. (There are also foil and logo sketch versions.)

Plus, we get a Super Powers cover out of the deal!

Supergirl #14, DC. I dropped Supergirl pretty early on — it’s me, I’m not the audience — and I’m not reading Reign of the Superboys because it’s not my thang, either. But it’s a kick that they’re digging Matrix out of the back of the closet — and she’s got a groovy outfit (assuming that’s her on the cover).

Avengers: Armageddon #1, Marvel. Another Alex Ross Marvel Dimensions cover.

There’re also ones for Mortal Thor #11 and X-Men #31:

Speaking of, I neglected to mention last week that the Doctor Strange one was set for last Wednesday.

Black Cat #11, Marvel. Another really cool variant, this one by Phil Noto. Love the use of negative space. (For another of the 1,000,006 covers, click here.)

The Amazing Spider-Man #546 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. The first issue of the Brand New Day period. Because movie! (Just like all the Supergirl stuff.)

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest Deluxe Edition Vol. 1, DC. Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s wonderful Superman/Batman series gets the deluxe hardcover treatment it so deserves.

DC Finest: Team-Ups — The Impossible Escape, DC. I cannot resist a collection of Bob Haney/Jim Aparo Batman team-ups.

Dan adds: Also includes stories from Super-Team Family, #1-7! Neat!

Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Mirror War (IDW Classic Collections). From David Tipton, Gavin Smith and your humble narrator, this epic tale of the Mirror Universe Enterprise-D crew is back, in convenient 6″ x 9″ format.

  1. Sophie Cambell has said on social media that she did not know about that cover copy, and that Matrix is not back in this issue.

She did say that a Matrix return is in this works, but gave no timeline.

This costume is relates specifically to the current storyline. The homage to the Tom Grummett image was just that – an homage.

  2. I am a fan of the Haney/Aparo B&B. The first issue I remember reading was #115, co-starring the Atom.

My one gripe about the Team-Ups volumes is that it appears they are not going to include the issues of World’s Finest that feature Superman and heroes other than Batman (or even Superman, Batman, and a third hero). I consider those stories precursors to the DC Comics Presents series we got a few years later.
