Don Newton’s SHAZAM! to Finally Get Collected

Captain Marvel fans rejoice!

Longtime Captain Marvel fans have long held in high regard Don Newton’s artistic run on the ’70s Shazam! series and subsequent run as a back-up feature. The installments have never been collected in book form — but that’s set to change.

Coming in the spring of 2021 is Shazam! The World’s Mightiest Mortal Vol. 3, according to a listing on the book-industry marketing platform Edelweiss+.

Dig the official description, as well as the cover by Michael Cho:

Shazam! The World’s Mightiest Mortal Vol. 3

By E. Nelson Bridwell/Don Newton

With one magic word… he becomes the World’s Mightiest Mortal… SHAZAM!

In 1973 DC brought back one of the most beloved superheroes of all time: Shazam! With the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury, Shazam is one of humankind’s most powerful champions!

Alongside superheroes like Superman and Batman, the World’s Mightiest Mortal will fight against villains…including Satan!

Collects World’s Finest Comics #253-270, World’s Finest Comics #272-282, and Adventure Comics #491 and #492.

A few thoughts:

World’s Finest #257. (Top image from same issue.)

— The 336-pager lists for $49.99 and is due May 18, 2021.

— Newton’s Shazam! #35 has already been collected in the second volume of this hardcover series.

— I’m a big fan of Michael Cho’s art and I recognize that DC wanted a consistent look for these volumes of Bronze Age reprints. But I still would have preferred art from the original series.

— It’s a good time to be a fan of the original Captain Marvel. DC has other groovy books on the way. Dig the links below.

— Standard caveat: This has not been solicited by DC yet, so nothing is official until it’s official. Even then, things can change. Just keep coming to 13th Dimension for updates.

  1. I hope they include some of the development artwork that Don Newton did for the early-1980s Earth One reboot of the character that he was preparing with Roy Thomas. What little I’ve seen was pretty cool (they re-imagined Billy and Cap as black characters). When Newton died, the project seemed to evaporate.

    • I winder if there is more artwork than just the one image of Earth-1 (black) Captain Thunder?

  2. It’s doubtful that the Cho cover is the final version. I think it’s a placeholder as it was the variant cover for SHAZAM! #3 (April 2019). BUT, this is fantastic news!

  4. I really enjoyed Don’s art on the BATMAN titles. I may have to get this. One caveat, “In 1973 DC brought back one of the most beloved superheroes of all time: Shazam! ” should read “Captain Marvel” since in 1973 that was still the character’s name.

  6. At last! I loved these stories, and they have long deserved to see some kind of collection. Newton and Bridwell are both vastly underrated, and created some of my favorite comic stories from my childhood.

  7. Good News.
Newton is my All-Time Favorite Batman artist and also a great CAPTAIN MARVEL artist.
I think Gil Kane also drew a story.
