Starting in May…

With the new era of detente between DC and Marvel, fans have gotten plenty of crossover comics, books and Facsimile Editions over the last year or so. It’s been a veritable goldmine, especially on the Superman/Spider-Man front.

Now, the two publishers have the next big one coming: a monthly Facsimile Edition re-release of all four issues of the 2003-04 JLA/Avengers miniseries by Kurt Busiek and George Perez.

Marvel made the announcement and will kick things off with Issue #1 in May. The two publishers will alternate, with Marvel also doing #3 and DC doing #2 and #4.

Several thoughts:

— If you’ve never read this, you’re in for a treat: It’s spectacular.

— This only gives us more hope we’ll eventually see the Batman/Hulk treasury and X-Men/New Teen Titans.

— Beyond this, there’s a ton of Facsimile news for May. Links below!

Obligatory Price Comparison: An unslabbed, NM- original recently sold on eBay for $26. Typically, though, the series is sold in sets. One recently went for $115, though you can also find them for less.

    • I would love to see this collected as a Treasury Edition.

  2. I was waiting for 13th Dimension to sound off on this!

I knew it was only a matter of time before this was back in print. New collected editions will probably be announced by the end of the year.

  3. I confess, this is a crossover I’ve never read. The price is decent and I must say, that cover looks great and very compelling. So, I shall give it a look!

  4. As someone who owns a Perez autographed copy of the trade: hell yeah I still intend to buy these.

Does anyone else view this story as the tail end of the post Crisis era? This may be the last major story with Morrison’s JLA lineup and Busiek’s post Onslaught Avengers. Starting around 2002, comics started to get very different and you wouldn’t see a story of this style again.

  5. Holding out hope that they eventually release this as a Deluxe Edition (to go with the two DC vs Marvel omnibuses from a couple of years ago) or re-release the Absolute Edition.

    • They already did three times. The first was a hardcover edition and the most recent one was released months before Perez’ death.

      • The relatively recent paperback version was a pretty limited print run though, that sold out before it even released. It would be nice for the book to get brought back into print on something closer to a normal and wildly available basis

It’s no particular skin off my back, I have both my original issues and the slipcased hardcover (that I luckily got half off when unluckily my then LCS went out of business) but it would be nice on general principle.

  6. They need to reprint the Absolute Edition. One of the rare books that has eluded me.

    • They should just make a new & much improved series. The last JL/Avengers wasn’t very good. Mikel Jannin would be my choice to pencil the series.

  7. Art was of course spectacular. The story started strong but faded at the end. Glad for those who want this though!

  11. Great for those that don’t have the original issues. But for us trade readers. Please release a collected edition. A new Absolute Edition would be a dream come true.

And while we’re at it a second printing of the Amalgam Omnibus as well. That went out of print way too fast.
