BOB DYLAN’S Greatest Contribution to Comics

Bob Dylan won the Nobel for literature today.

So it’s only fitting that his most pronounced contribution to comics, as it were, was the use of The Times They Are a-Changin’ in the opening-credits sequence for Watchmen.

Now, whether you like the movie or not (and I do, actually), the book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons is mainstream comics’ most literate work.

And the opening credits are the most inspired part of the movie itself.

  1. The opening chapter of the Watchmen comic takes its title (“At Midnight, All the Agents…”) and epigram (“At midnight, all the agents and superhuman crew go out and round up everyone who knows more than they do.”) from another Dylan song, “Desolation Row.”
