Welcome to BATMAN PINUPALOOZA, a 60th anniversary celebration of the seven seminal 1966 Batman pinups by penciller Carmine Infantino and inker Murphy Anderson that in large measure became the definitive versions of the Dynamic Duo and their venal villains for years to come.
This is a 13th Dimension theme week unlike any we’ve done before: Each of our artists — Kerry Callen, Bill Morrison, Des Taylor, Walt Grogan (who did that fab banner), Chris Franklin, Dakota Alexander and Franco — is reimagining at least one of the pinups every day this week, with equal parts reverence, whimsy and humor. If you’ve noticed, nobody this week has riffed on Batman and Robin on the rooftop. That’s pretty much because folks like Bill Morrison, Des Taylor and Dakota Alexander have already done it in the past.
But we still needed to represent, so here’s Franco’s colorful take:
I’m not an expert in fine art but I know enough to look at this and think of both Picasso and Warhol. So I asked Franco his inspiration.
His answer?
“It’s really a mix of pop art and Cubist. I’m a Picasso fan but my colors more reflect the pop art scene, like Warhol.”
And there you have it.

Franco and his forehead have traveled the world and he writes and draws stuff. Franco is the creator, artist and writer of Patrick the Wolf Boy and Aw Yeah Comics! Franco has worked on books/comics, including Tiny Titans and Superman Family Adventures. Franco was also a high-school teacher and is one of the principal owners of Aw Yeah Comics retail stores. Dan made Franco add that he has won three Eisners.
