Annie Nocenti’s DAREDEVIL to Get Epic Collection

A groovy run by a groovy writer. And the artist is no slouch either…

Annie Nocenti is one of the coolest comics creators I’ve ever met. Helluva storyteller too, natch. So check out what’s coming in 2023: Daredevil Epic Collection: A Touch of Typhoid.

Dig the description from an Amazon listing:

DAREDEVIL EPIC COLLECTION: A TOUCH OF TYPHOID

By Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr.

How do you solve a problem like Mary? That’s Typhoid Mary, the lethally seductive assassin unleashed by the Kingpin in his campaign to break Matt Murdock. She’s a “love-maker and a man-hater” with multiple personalities – including one to target Matt, and another with her sights set on Daredevil! Under attack from both sides, the champion of Hell’s Kitchen may be powerless to resist! Then, DD dances with demons when INFERNO rages in Manhattan, and his old life will be left in ashes. And everything goes to hell when the -Devil locks horns with Mephisto! See both sides as Daredevil clashes with the Punisher, and meet the dark soul known as Blackheart! Will the Man Without Fear be left as a Man Without Hope? Collecting DAREDEVIL (1964) #253-270 and PUNISHER (1987) #10.

A few thoughts:

— The 472-page paperback of ’80s stories lists for $44.99 and is due July 11, 2023.

— The edition includes the Christmas classic A Beer With the Devil, which Annie wrote about here. Great story and a great story behind the story.

— A helpful, eagle-eyed reader points out that this is a re-release of an edition published in 2016. So if you missed it then, here you go!

— Standard caveat: This has not been officially solicited by Marvel yet, so anything can change. That said, I fully expect this to see print. Keep checking back at 13th Dimension for updates.

  1. I truly think Ann Nocenti was one of the writers that truly felt like a Frank Miller successor! And the JRJR artwork of this period was SUPERB!

  2. This is a reprint of a volume that came out in 2016, not a new collection

  3. Nocenti and JRJR were very worth successors to Mr. Miller. Loved the Typhoid Mary storyline. Honestly, the hits kept coming when Chichester took over. A truly outstanding period for DD!

  4. I already have the first printing of this Epic Collection and it’s one of my favorites. Truly, Ann Nocenti’s run on DD is a classic, and underappreciated, period in Horn-Head’s history. Everyone likes JR, JR’s stylish art, but it’s the imaginative plotting and emotional characterization of Matt Murdock and his supporting cast of trends and foes that kept me coming back month after month.

Thanks for putting this neglected era in the spotlight.

  5. I was never much of a Daredevil reader and I hadn’t heard of “A Beer With The Devil.” Having had my share of dismal days where the bright spot was a beer or two (oh, face it, I used to get sloshed!) at a local pub, it sounds intriguing!
