We ran some pretty cool Batman art by Matt Wagner the other day. Great stuff.

Then Thursday, Alex Ross posted his latest painting of the Darknight Detective on Twitter:

Also great stuff — and not just because of the classic Rossian Bat-imagery, but because of the inspired use of the dominant Bronze Age Batman logo. And though I think any color scheme for the logo would have worked, this palette really sets off the 3-D effect.

By the by, that color pattern was used a number of times in the Bronze Age. Here’s one really good example:

Ernie Chan art. Colors by Tatjana Wood.

  2. Had me at the logo. But, he lost me at the price. I’d love to own an original piece of his work but I can’t even afford his prints.

  3. Hmmm… if he really wanted to pay tribute to Bronze Age Batman, he’d have the yellow oval. Other than that nit-pick, it’s gorgeous!
