13 Far Out MARVEL SLURPEE CUPS of the ’70s

It’s 7/11! Time for BRAINFREEZE!

You may or may not remember, but a couple of years ago I did a piece on the Marvel and DC Slurpee cups of the 1970s.

People dug it and it spawned a sequel, as well as a special podcast on the Fire and Water Podcast Network. (Click here to listen!)

Anyway, it’s the thick of summer and it just felt like the right time to hit 7-Eleven, grab a Coke Slurpee and again reminisce about those awesome cups from the Bronze Age.

This time around, I’ve picked 13 especially nifty Marvel cups, mostly featuring B-List and C-List characters. Why? Because A) Marvel had a ton of cups to choose from and 2) it’s great that they really dove deep into the catalogue.

Oh, quick aside: You know how to cure brainfreeze? Press the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth. It may take a moment but it works almost every time. Because science.

Far out.

Scarlet Witch is my fave of this batch because it looks like she’s magically popping through the cup.

Oh, and all these pix were taken from eBay. Which means you can buy these cups! It also means the photos are of wildly varying quality. Sorry!

And for consistency, I chose cups from the earlier series, with their simpler designs.

  2. In the mid-70s, I was a sailor in Norfolk and a frequent Slurpee slurper. I would stack my cups to the ceiling, alternating top and bottom to make it work. Then my one-year-old son, just learning to walk, would knock the bottom cup to make them fall, and I’d stack again. He thought it was hilarious. Now he’s a lawyer in California, introducing his own small children to comics.

  3. This is a great post. Thanks! I’m writing from Afghanistan, but even way out here we remember that 7-11 has Free Slurpee Day this week every year. I’m surprised you didn’t mention it! So it really is the perfect time for this post!
