13 COVERS: The Wacky World of GREEN LANTERN

Maybe he didn’t get turned into a puppet — but he did fight a giant one…

Green Lantern: Earth One, by Gabriel Hardman, Corinna Bechko and Jordan Boyd, is out this week. As the title tells you, it’s the latest in DC’s Earth One line of original graphic novels that reimagine the publisher’s stalwarts in a separate universe that’s not beholden to often convoluted continuity.

I’m especially intrigued by the Green Lantern entry because it’s hard to just pick up a regular DC Universe GL book these days. Over the last 10 years, even through reboots and revamps, it feels like you have to be an Oan scholar to really understand what’s happening. That’s cool if that’s what you’re into, no sweat. But for me, a guy who just likes to read stories about a dude with a fancy ring that can do all sorts of neat tricks, I kind of feel like I’m left on the outside looking in.

What to do? Well, I tend to go back and re-read the classics when the mood strikes. I’m talking old-school, Silver Age stuff. And man, I tell you, Hal Jordan had some seriously wacky adventures. People talk about the Flash getting turned into a puppet or having his head blow up like a balloon. (Click here for more on that. You want to.) But the ring-slinger had some dandies of his own.

So here are 13 COVERS celebrating the Wacky World of Green Lantern:

  1. The best part of GL was the Gil Kane artwork.

  2. Gotta love how everyone in 5708 is wearing yoga pants. Some things never go out of style.

And I wonder if Neal Adams got paid in full to ink only half of that cover. 😉
