13 COVERS: The CONAN of ERNIE CHAN

A BIRTHDAY SALUTE to the Hyborian workhorse…

Comics were built on the backs of guys like the late Ernie Chan — artists who were never stars but brought the goods month in and month out, year after year.

Chan — born 85 years ago on July 27, 1940 — worked on a gajillion books either as penciller, inker or cover artist. Marvel’s Bronze Age version of Conan the Barbarian is one of the characters with whom he’s most associated, so for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday tribute, we take you to Cimmeria.

Far out.

  1. >>> artists who were never stars….

I definitely considered him one. His BATMAN covers are ones I recognize immediately and with a flood of great memories.

  2. Chan/Chau’s work was very recognisable back in the Bronze Age and I collected the Conan comic.

I’ve never seen those Savage Sword issues before. Issue 29 with the serpents is very striking.

  3. The cover of Detective Comics 459 was my introduction. I love how dynamic his work is.
