13 COVERS: A MAC RABOY Birthday Celebration

One of comics’ greatest cover artists was born 108 years ago…

The late Mac Raboy — born April 9, 1914 — was one of comics’ finest illustrators and easily one of the greatest cover artists who ever lived.

It’s been too long since I’ve written about him so it was a special joy to fly back into his work with this 13 COVERS gallery.

For this year’s salute, I went with Captain Marvel Jr.’s self-titled mag. Just for kicks.

Killer diller.

Holy crap! It’s the Vulture!

007 has nothing on Captain Marvel Jr.!

  1. Those are some great covers. Elvis was such a fan of Captain Marvel, Jr. that he took inspiration from his hair, including the blue-black color, and later on the lightning bolt. Raboy’s drawings help me understand why.

  2. Mac Raboy’s artwork had much to do with Elvis being such a Captain Marvel Jr. fan. Elvis even copied his iconic hairstyle after Freddy Freeman’s alter ego. So it’s Raboy who could be considered Elvis’ original hair stylist! Elvis’ fascination with Cap Jr. will be included in this summer’s theatrical Elvis biopic.
