13 COVERS: A GIL KANE Spider-Man Celebration

Gil Kane was born April 6, 192690 years ago. Here are 13 COVERS of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man!

Kane, who died in 2000, is one of my absolute favorites, a staple of the Silver and Bronze ages, an all-time great.

Now, when I sat down to figure out the requisite 13 COVERS salute, I immediately thought of Green Lantern. That’s always who I think of first when I think of Kane. But 13 Green Lantern covers just didn’t seem enough. (Last year, I did 13 COVERS of a general nature and that didn’t even seem right at the time.)

So, who did I think of next? The Atom. But then, I thought, I can’t ignore his great work for Marvel. Ergo, Spider-Man.

So that’s where we are, three sets of 13 COVERS: For Green Lantern, the Atom and Spider-Man.

Of course, when you’re considering someone as prolific and popular as Kane, there are so many other ways you could go. I fully recognize that. But there’s always next year. That’s the beauty of it. And hey, as usual, feel free to add your own favorite covers in the comments below or in whichever social-media thread you found this. (These are in no special order, by the way.)

  1. It’s interesting to see how many covers John Romita “embellished” (literally). I don’t feel so bad about him having his way with Kirby covers. This mid-’70s style of cover (lots of stupid balloons and captions everywhere, and the art crammed into the borders) was what the editors wanted, so it’s what Gil and Jack (and John) gave ’em. Gill was such an awesome draftsman, and this was still when he drew anatomy with big deltoids, or maybe Johnny just inked them that way–? Anyway, great slew of covers! Thanks, Dan!

  2. Well CB,

Now that you mention it,…I have them all.

Wow! That Kane anatomy always gets me. So powerful. Love his stuff.

He did a run of the first 15 or so Marvel Team-Ups where the interior art is so great. Some overlooked lost classics there someone needs to examine.
