13 COVERS: A DICK GIORDANO Birthday Celebration

An absolute, utter, no-question, all-time favorite…

I’ll get right to it: The late Dick Giordano — who was born 87 years ago — is one of my favorite artists of all time. Certainly my favorite inker.

And even though he had quite the varied career, I will forever associate him with Batman. Big surprise there, I know.

Anyway, he only did so many covers of the Caped Crusader as both penciller and inker, but I don’t mind sharing a 13 COVERS selection from the same, relatively limited pool every year.

Because the heart wants what the heart wants — and the heart wants some clean, sharp Dick Giordano Batman (and Batman-related) art.

Right on.

Back cover to Detective Comics #483. That counts!

  1. I share your love of Giordano – along with Adams, Kubert and Perez, one of my all-time faves. He made every penciller look better.

  3. Giordano is one of the artists I grew up with and is definitely one of my top ten favorites of all time. I’ve never actually sat down and made a physical list or rated them from 1st favorite to tenth because they are all to good to do that to.

But on my list including Giordano would also be Adams and Perez, Alex Ross, John Buscema, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, all the Kuberts as one, Michael Turner, Dave Cockrum and my newest addition ( who probably bumped someone else off of my top 10 ) Jason Fabok.

  5. Thank you everyone above for such kind, thoughtful comments! 🙂 I miss Dick Giordano (my dad) very much. My 7 year old daughter Josie, Dick’s granddaughter, has apparently inherited much of his DNA and is quite an amazing accomplished illustrator! She never once had an art lesson, except spiritually from Grandpa 😉 — they never got to meet in person, he passed a year before she was born … Picked up a pencil at age two and stunned everyone who watched her draw!

    • That’s fantastic about your daughter Rich. I’m not one to believe in reincarnation but definitely believe in genetic inheritance as you said. I hope she can carry on the great Giordano name in the near to distant future. God Bless.
