Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #55 hits Wednesday, and it features the return of Ra’s al Ghul, in all his mountain-lair, ecoterrorist glory.
Ra’s — created by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams in 1971’s Batman #232 — is by far the greatest Batman adversary who debuted in the Silver and Bronze Ages, so it’s only fitting that the Demon’s Head, in his 55th anniversary year, has recruited a quartet of supervillains who not only share his worldview in some way or another, but also made their first appearances in the same era: Poison Ivy (1966’s Batman #181), Ocean Master (1966’s Aquaman #29), Queen Bee (1963’s Justice League of America #23), and Tokamak (1983’s The Fury of Firestorm #18).

I don’t typically care for Ra’s teaming up with other bad guys; I find he’s far more effective as a Blofeld type. But his collection of these “four harbingers of the apocalypse” fits his extremist mission to eradicate most of the world’s population to achieve his agenda of restoring balance to nature.
Plus, there will be sword fighting at some point during this arc.
