Thinking of the ’80s this week…
Five years ago, we ran a piece called WHY ED HANNIGAN IS ONE OF THE GREATEST BATMAN COVER ARTISTS EVER on the illustrator’s 70th birthday. (He was born Aug. 6, 1951.)
Since then, we’ve featured Hannigan galleries highlighting other characters, but with this week’s news that DC will be publishing the Batman by Doug Moench Omnibus Vol. 1 in 2027, the time seemed ripe to go back to the artist’s Bat-well for his 75th birthday. After all, he turned out a lot of the covers during the early part of Moench’s run. (And a bunch during Gerry Conway’s too.)
So dig these 13 COVERS — and make sure you check out that gallery from 2021, too! The first one here also provides the cover art for the upcoming omnibus.

I’m hoping that DC will one day reprint the story he drew for Denny O’Neil, BATMAN SHAMAN.
I have the single issues, but it really deserves a deluxe hardcover.

Thanks for this. I always loved Ed Hannigan’s cover for Marvel and DC. His Batman and Detective covers were amazing, and all of the ones on this list are great. The one that always stood out for me was Batman 362 with the Riddler. The angle and the positioning of the characters was so captivating and the colours were just bang-on.

His Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man covers were really nice too. His figures are more Ditko-esque.
