I personally think that Marvel has always done a better job when showing the cosmic. Dates back to Kirby, sure, but an ethereal, spacey quality imbues their more out-there comics in a way that DC’s never has.
Here, we get the best of both worlds, with this Martian Manhunter piece by Dakota:

But it wasn’t Kirby or Starlin whom Dakota was thinking of when he did this.
“This was at a very Darwyn Cooke period for me,” sez Dakota. “I had (finally) read The New Frontier and it rocked my world, and so I was doing a lot of Cooke-style DC art for a bit.”
