SUPERMAN/SPIDER-MAN #1: DC Goes BRONZE AGE in NEW WAVE of Superb Variant Covers

Including an homage to the original 1976 treasury…

DC on Wednesday revealed a whole new wave of Superman/Spider-Man #1 variant covers, and I gotta say, I dig ’em even more than the first round.

Why? Because there are plenty of Bronze Age homages, including a riff on the cover of the classic 1976 Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man treasury, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary (and which was released as a Facsimile Edition in January).

Not only that, there will be a pin-up by Jorge Jimenez that pays tribute to the original’s back cover by Ross Andru and co.:

Dig these variants:

Jorge Jiménez and Tomeu Morey

Scott Koblish and Hi-Fi

Rafael Sandoval and Ulises Arreola

Adam Hughes

Evan “Doc” Shaner

Chrissie Zullo-Uminga

Mitch Gerads

J. Scott Campbell and Nei Ruffino

Jeff Spokes

Steve Lieber and Nathan Fairbairn

A few thoughts:

Previously released Jimenez main cover

Superman/Spider-Man #1 is due March 25. Marvel’s Spider-Man/Superman #1 follows April 15.

— The issue’s main story — “Truth, Justice, and Great Responsibility” — is by Mark Waid and Jiménez, and there will be a slew of back-ups.

— There are more variants to come, by artists including Arthur Adams, Olivier Coipel, and Joshua Middleton. Marvel unveiled a second wave of its own for Spider-Man/Superman #1 last week.
