A few thoughts:

— This is a helluva selection. Below are links to the other DC Finest editions that are set for 2026, so far.

— You’ll notice that not all of these have complete issue lists. I’m especially curious to see what’s exactly in that Robin volume. That’s a fave cover too, from 1965’s Detective Comics #342.

Standard caveat: The descriptions come from Penguin Random House’s online catalogue. PRH handles DC in the book market. These haven’t been formally solicited by DC yet, so nothing is official until it’s official.

  1. I’m really liking DC’s collected editions strategy these days for their classic material. I personally prefer Absolute Editions for the top tier work (by mid next year I’ll have about 19, with a wish list of about another 15), and Omnibus/Deluxe Editions for everything else. But I know that others aren’t as keen on the oversized hardcover formats and prefer the DC Finest paperbacks. And then there’s the really cheap, mass market sized Compact Editions for newbies (Compacts are too small for my taste, but I’ve found they’re great (they’re so cheap!) for giving to others if you want to introduce them to books that you love without breaking the bank). I appreciate that they’re serving all audiences and preferences.

  2. Hmmm. Something seems “off” with the credits here. The “Team-Ups: The Impossible Escape” mentions Arnold Drake, but I’m struggling to recall any story he wrote that fits into the description for this collection. Unless they are counting the Deadman origin story he wrote that was *reprinted* in one of those Brave & Bolds? Likewise, when was there a Demon story written by Jim Starlin? Starlin wrote a Batman story that shared an issue of Detective Comics with a Demon story drawn by Mike Golden. Almost seems like one person compiled an issue list, and then another person went to the Grand Comics Database and copied down creators’ names willy-nilly from those issues.

Also odd they are included Flash #191 with the O’Neil / Adams GL/GA stuff. That Flash/GL team-up preceded GL #76 by a good 6 months– it would have been published the same month as GL #71. Now don’t get me wrong, I’d be happy to see some really diverse anthologies along the lines of the old 100 Page Super-Spectaculars. But these seem to be aiming for chunks of consecutive issues, while not actually hitting those marks. Weird.

    • Without looking it up, it could be because these volumes are kinda supposed to be chronological (not all of them apparently). Which might mean the FL volume doesn’t actually begin with issue 76. Might begin earlier but it’s the Adams issues that are the selling point.

  3. Maybe if you are going to do a book about Sgt. Rock you should have him on the cover?

    • I’m not seeing my original post just a correction to it. So I’ll try again.

Regarding Green Lantern, we don’t have the full issues listed in this post. Notice that only 7 issues of the Adams run is listed. This volume will pick up where the previous volume left off (the Guy Gardner one). DC Direct is trying to be fully chronological, so we will see a bunch of GL appearances prior to GLGA 76, including the Flash issue.

      • That makes sense, thanks! At 601 pages, they must be planning to publish many more issues than are called out in the description.

  4. The DC Finest editions are great but DC need to start doing some 80’s stuff like All-Star Squadron, The Fury of Firestorm, Infinity Inc. and Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld to name a few.

    • And Warlord! I want that badly. Same with All-Star Squadron.

    • Captain Atom, Chekmate and Manhunter would be great! Paul Kupperberg´s corner of the DCU was great.

  5. I would think the Robin Finest would be pretty much the same content as the Showcase presents Robin volume, with maybe a couple more stories (just in color). Pretty much like the Sgt. Rock Finest has the same contents as the first Showcase Rock with a few more stories added.
