MIKE KALUTA Recalls the Moment He ‘Got’ JACK KIRBY

The comics luminary recalls his epiphany about the King…

One of the things I dig writing and reading about are the comics and creators who moved those who came after. It’s baked into 13th Dimension’s DNA.

But what I especially like is when a big name admits that it took them time to understand the work of someone like, say, Jack Kirby.

For example, Michael W. Kaluta in the latest issue of Jack Kirby Collector, out Oct. 7. The mag is packed with the usual great features, but tucked in there is a column by Kaluta recalling his epiphany about the King.

Dig this EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT from Issue #79:

As a kid, I wasn’t a big Kirby fan. I found his style to be overwhelming and a little unsettling. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I could understand what all the fuss is about. But I’m just some shmo.

A guy like Mike Kaluta? Well, that’s pretty cool.

In any event, here’s the issue’s complete table of contents. You can get the mag at your local shop or directly through publisher TwoMorrows. (Click here.)

  1. Kirby was comic books!
Plenty of pretenders …no one could touch the man.. Inventive as thomas edison and prolific….marvel stole his ideas..and millions of dolllars from the kirby family. Kirby gave me and thousands like me.. a wonderful cornor of my childhood. He invented Far too many super heroes to name..everyone knows.. They were HIS ideas…not the other guy…with massive beautiful illustrations…any kid above the age of 12 could have filled in the ballons to tell the story laid before your eyes. He was, simply put…the King!
