Little Known Fact: MISTY KNIGHT Has Great Taste In Hamburgers

DESPOP TUESDAYS!

Des is traveling this week, so I picked off something from his website for this week’s column — something surprisingly personal to me.

See, when I was a young kid in early-’70s New Jersey, my favorite fast-food hamburger joint wasn’t McDonald’s or Burger King. It was the late, lamented Burger Chef on Route 35 and (I think) West Park Avenue in Ocean Township, N.J.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the same one, but this is what it looked like, including its surrounding environment.

Why I liked Burger Chef more than the others, I don’t really remember, but maybe it was the very-much-of-its-time decor and kid friendly vibe. (Though McDonald’s and Burger King were also welcoming to the young set.) Perhaps, I just liked the food better. And I do remember they used to give away these really cool orange rubber balls.

Whatever the reason, I’m kicking myself for not being there the day that Marvel’s Misty Knight showed up for a tasty burger and a tasty beverage:

I managed to ask Des from his distant sojourn why in the world he picked Burger Chef for this one. (He is a Brit, after all.)

His answer explained everything: “Cause it’s groovy, baby. You dig?”

Yes. Yes, I do.
