LANTERNS: 13 COVERS of HAL JORDAN and JOHN STEWART Doing Earth Stuff

Seen the trailer for this August’s new show on HBO Max?

Well, here it is:

I’ve heard Lanterns described as kind of True Detective-ish, and I dig that, because I dig Earthbound Green Lantern adventures. (Never was a big comics space opera kind of guy, except in certain doses.)

Anyway, how about 13 COVERS of Hal Jordan and John Stewart doing Earth stuff?

  1. Setting a Green Lantern movie in rural America is like setting a Star Wars movie in Chicago or a Babe Ruth movie on the moon. I guess you could do it, and it’s possible that it might be interesting, but you’re going so far afield from what makes each of those subjects unique that I begin to question what the point is.

For me, the best idea for a Green Lantern movie / TV series would essentially be James Cameron’s “Aliens” (1986), but the space battalion would have laser rings (do away with the constructs, which I think is a turn off to most viewers) to fight an unbeatable monster. And at the end of the movie, only one or two Lanterns are still standing (John and/or Hal), and that’s how you *show* that they’re the best (not by just *telling* everyone over and over again they’re the best from the very beginning (as is too often the case with modern GL stories)).

    • I would assume that this series is a take on the Danny O’Neal/Neil Adams run where they did a road trip around America, with a guardian of OA in tow. and like you said in the trailer he’s a human and therefore is protecting Earth and therefore would probably be on earth more than off Earth especially if in this series we don’t have a lot of contact with aliens that are regularly visiting the planet and causing issues. there’s also budget considerations on the show. they made you more cosmic stuff later if it gets a whole bunch of seasons.

  2. With all of the F-bombs in the trailer, it’s going to be hard to watch this show, like Titans and Doom Patrol before it. Makes one wonder how in the world Gardner Fox, Denny O’Neil, et. al. managed to write Green Lantern for years without any harsh language. And to think, the Lanterns became popular anyway. I prefer my superheroes squeaky-clean, please.

    • Yea. Doesn’t work for me either. That’s all I’m going to say on it.

    • I agree. The F-bombs seem forced, like they’re trying oh-so-hard for this show about space police to be taken seriously. Other than that, it looks like they might have a good show. They should just trust the popularity of the source material, and their particular take on it. It seems like they don’t.

    • especially in the run that this takes inspiration from with green arrow, neither of those heroes are portrayed as squeaky clean at all. not even close.

  3. I get what Daniel is saying, but let’s not forget the Hal Jordan-truck driver arc that had some unique settings but still offered some good stories. I’m a Kyle Chandler fan ( I covered high school sports for 15 plus years. His portrayal of Coach Taylor is still the most genuine) so I will definitely give this a look.

  4. It sort of reminds me of the Incredible Hulk TV show. I was not a fan of the comic at the time, but I loved the show. It’s probably not going to appeal to long-time fans of the Green Lantern comic, but it might work for non-comics fans. It is too bad that series can’t be made anymore for a broad range of ages. I mean, the Six Million Dollar Man appealed to adults and kids.

  5. wow what a great collection of covers. some of which I have. I’ve never seen Jack Sparling’s work, looks like maybe it’s the inspiration for Neal Adams? I’m going to have to track down his stuff. anybody know what series he’s worked on?
