The late Joe Kubert’s centennial is Friday, and DC has updated its offerings with a lush piece…

DC on Wednesday is publishing no less than three books and comics in celebration of the late Joe Kubert’s centennial on Friday. (He was born Sept. 18, 1926.)
You can get the full rundown in this week’s HOT PICKS, so rather than repeat ourselves, we’re going here with the news that a second cover — a foil special, no less — has been added to Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers #1.
The main cover focuses on Sgt. Rock — no surprise there…

Left is back, right is front
… but the added foil cover reminds us that Kubert had a lengthy career in superhero books:

Left is back, right is front
The original version, Superman #216, came out in March 1969.
You could argue that DC should have gone with Hawkman, but the Winged Wonder doesn’t come close to selling like the Man of Steel does. Besides, it also plays off Kubert’s war comic oeuvre.
The main ish lists at $5.99. The foil goes for $8.99.

I’m glad I preordered the book, though not the foil cover. It looks great!

$9 for a foil cover on a pinup book? Hard pass.

The foil was in the solicits when they came out. We just had no idea they were doing a completely different cover for the foil and not the Sgt Rock one like most foils are done

Sucks for me because I had pre-ordered the foil and it seemed kind of rude to cancel it so late in the game. I like foil variants of the original, but not new artwork on facsimiles.

This isn’t a Facsimile. It’s a collection of covers. It’s also classic art.

I think in general he doesn’t like the trend of a new cover art on a reprint book, whether foil or not. I don’t think he meant this particular book since the artwork of Superman is obviously not new. At least that’s how I read it. I’m not a fan either though there have been a few I couldn’t pass up.

Ah, thanks. I guess I thought it was a facsimile because it’s coming out the same time as the DC Special facsimile (whose cover confuses me as to its contents 😀 ).
In any case, I generally prefer the main cover. I do buy (non-facsimile) DC variants because I like the cardboard cover and it includes the regular cover, as well. However, I don’t think they do that for foil variants (go figure).
I’m actually not against classic covers being reprinted (such as those Marvel lenticular covers), but I’m not a fan of this cover.

Any word on a Enemy Ace cover?

Nope, no word
