JACK KIRBY: The Precursors That Led to the Silver Age

INSIDE LOOK: Jack Kirby Collector #78 looks at the development of Thor, the Hulk, Iron Man and MORE…

John Morrow’s new Jack Kirby Collector is due Feb. 12 and Issue #78 just happens to be the august mag’s 25th anniversary — the Silver Anniversary, if you will:

So it only goes to follow that the issue plays up Kirby’s connections to the Silver Surfer and, more expansively, the Silver Age.

Dig the table of contents:

That’s quite a lot to choose from for our regular EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT. But since I’m a sucker for stories about creators’ influences, check out this peek at Alex Grand’s exploration of Kirby’s Silver Age precursors.

Grand, who heads up the Comic Book Historians podcast and its vibrant Facebook page, lays out for readers the various early concepts that led to some of the greatest characters in comics.

There are also entries for the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and others. And again, the rest of the issue is packed with illuminating material, so by all means get yourself a copy.

Jack Kirby Collector #78 is due to ship Feb. 12, with a deluxe edition also available, featuring a silver sleeve boasting a Kirby Silver Surfer image. The mag is available through comics shops but you can also get it directly through TwoMorrows. (Click here.)

  1. I always wondered about a gamma bomb that wasn’t even powerful enough to vaporize a single guy. It didn’t even singe him — not so much as a bad sunburn. I always figured it must be like a neutron bomb, just pure gamma radiation and no actual physical damage from heat or concussive force.
