HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #156 Facsimile Edition, DC. One of the most beloved — and, to Grant Morrison, influential — Bat-stories of the Silver Age gets the Facsimile treatment. I cannot wait to see this cover in foil, and the logo variant is groovy too. By the way, the book is being released now because there’s an appearance by a character called Ant-Man — playing into the whole DC/Marvel schtick that’s been going on. (Last week it was Batman #127 — featuring a version of Thor that predated Marvel’s.)

There are a lot of sketch covers with this logo now, but I really dig the yellow-on-lavender.

The Amazing Spider-Man #14 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. The first appearance of the Green Goblin! Great choice, Marvel!

Archie Comics 85th Anniversary Presents: Betty & Veronica Swimsuit Special, Archie. A one-shot that’s exactly what the title says it is. Did you know yesterday was National Bikini Day? It was. Anyway, there are also two Dan DeCarlo variants — one B and one V — and all three covers are available in standard and foil.

Dan Parent, DeCarlo, DeCarlo

Batman and the Monster Men, DC. A re-release of the trade collecting the first part of Matt Wagner’s 2005-07 early-days Batman maxiseries. This is the real Batman: Year Two, if you ask me.

Punisher & Fury, Marvel. An omnibus that collects four MAX series by Garth Ennis, primarily set in Vietnam, Cuba and other bloody Cold War locations. Some of the best modern war (and true-to-life espionage) comics you’ll ever read. Searing, serious and deeply compelling. Art by Goran Parlov and Jacen Burrows.

The Amazing Spider-Man #129 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. This is the third release of this particular Facsimile, but this time around there’s a blue-foil variant that looks mighty tempting.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout #3, DC. Y’know, this has been kinda fun so far.

The Fury of Firestorm #4, DC. You know what character design doesn’t get enough credit? Firehawk, rendered on this variant by Guillem March. (She was created by Gerry Conway and Pat Broderick.)

Green Lantern #49 Facsimile Edition, DC. GL #50 is coming too, but it hasn’t been scheduled yet. Weirdly, DC isn’t re-releasing the three-parter’s first part, Issue #48, which features Kyle Rayner’s first appearance (in a cameo). Word around Coast City is that the upcoming TV show Lanterns riffs on Emerald Twilight, at least in part, so…

Vampyrates#1, Boom! The latest from our pal Fred Van Lente (and artist Luca Pizzari): Pirates and vampires — what more could you possibly want?

Civil War: Unmasked #3 and Wolverine #23, Marvel. Two more Alex Ross Marvel Dimensions covers. I don’t care what you say; you will never persuade me that this wasn’t Wolverine’s best costume. And it’s not even close.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

IDW Classic Collections — Star Trek: Aliens, IDW Publishing. Amazing tales of the aliens of Star Trek, featuring three stories (the Gorn, the Orions, and Q!) by David Tipton, David Messina, Elena Casagrande, and your humble narrator. Boldly go!

Crisis on Infinite Earths: Absolute Edition, DC. Newly remastered and recolored, the quintessential crossover event book is back in a new oversize hardcover. Wolfman, Perez and Ordway all the way.

Dan adds: Wanna see inside? You most definitely do. Click here.

Amazing Spider-Man: Torn, Marvel. J. Michael Straczynski returns to Spider-Man, with a new adventure from Peter Parker’s college years! Trade paperback collects the five-issue miniseries.

  2. I wonder if I still have my old copy of Batman and the Monster Men?
I might wanna get that reprint just in case. Hopefully they’ll also release a new print of Wagner’s Batman and the Mad Monk.
Faces I definitely know I still have in my single issues of Legends of the Dark Knight.

  3. “I must put away my Batman costume and retire from crime fighting.”

Can’t wait to get my hands on this new foil cover!!

I recently reread Morrison’s Batman run again earlier this year. Absolutely brilliant when the space alien’s face shows up in issue #672 and again later in Batman #677.
